Participation is open to young people studying for a qualification in vocational education who have been born in 1991 or after. The vocational basic degree training refers to an education that will lead to a basic degree, or that is a preliminary training in an institute or as an apprentice.

Category Prerequisites for the Qualification

The competition tasks of this category are based on the requirements of level 3 (on a scale of 1-3) as described in the curriculum-based training of a vocational degree. The tasks are practical and are drawing and modelling related design tasks. The tasks do not require broad theoretical knowledge.

Category Values

General Description of the Category

Competitors will compete in the production of draft work in CAD design. The draft work can be of technical drawings, text or 3D models, which are used as aids in the planning and marketing of varied products. The tasks are by nature general tasks and do not require specialized knowledge of design. They might include making calculations and/or presentation graphics.

Skill requirements

The competitor should show mastery of the basic skills of a design assistant: office skills, technical planning, and the producing of technical drawings and specifications for mechanical, construction, heating and ventilation, and electrical purposes.

A successful competitor should be able to:

-Make 3D-models and use them in making technical drawings and in marketing
-Make technical drawings using the CAD program, according to standards
-Use valid methods and notation in the making of technical drawings, according to standards
-Make changes in technical drawings
-Measure and draft a given piece to the degree that a model and technical drawing can be made from the specifications
-Use general office software to produce text, spreadsheet calculations, and graphic presentations
-Use different programs and standards at work to the best advantage
-Use basic measuring tools
-Express opinions clearly and inspire trust
In addition to these requirements, the competitor should:
-Understand and follow directions
-Be able to plan the use of time in the competition situation
-Follow safety rules
-Be a self-starter

Finals Schedule (preliminary)
Category Finals to be held from May 3-5,2011 at the Kuopio Hall, Kuopio

Task Description, length and time allowed for completion
In CAD categories the competition will be in producing drawings. The tasks are modular and include the following:
-The measuring and drafting of a given piece
-The production of 3D model and 2D drawings from a drawing
-The making of a 3D configuration model from parts of models and visualisation
-making changes in 3D models or 2D drawing according to instructions given

The competition tasks are based on the requirements of level 3 (on a scale of 1-3) described in the curriculum-based training of a vocational degree. The framework of the competition tasks form a description of the competition which is accepted by the category supervisory body, and which includes the most important areas of the basic vocational degree. This framework also ensures that in judging, these areas will be evaluated. The competition tasks are modular so that it is possible to calculate the winners at the end of each competition day.

The description of the competition task will be published 2 months before the Finnish National Competition at the latest. Tasks from earlier years will be published as model tasks by the organisers on the Internet pages. The descriptions will include the nature of the tasks, and the equipment, the devices, the materials, and the work stages to be used. The task will be changed by the actions of the competition category jury by about 30% at the competition area before the beginning of the competition. Possible advance notification of information related to the category tasks will be made so that all competitors have the same standing.

Preliminary Evaluation Method

The jury will decide the standings of the competitors by giving points to each competitor. The WorldSkills CIS based point system will be used, in which the category maximum points are 100/600 points.

The competition performances will be judged daily, the final evaluation criteria will be decided by the category jury. In the case of any competitor endangering themselves or others, or using any of the forbidden methods, the competition can be discontinued.

Evaluation components in CAD

-Subjective component, in which the layout, placement, clarity, functionality, etc are checked.
-Objective component, in which accuracy of measurements and their existence, markings on drawings, validity, etc. are checked.
Part A: 2D task (2 hr, 30 min) 16.5%
Part B: 3D task (4 hr) 27%
